Physical activity should be a very important part of your life. It can improve your health and your well-being. It reduces stress, increases energy levels and helps you maintain and achieve your optimal weight.
Physical activity is something that everyone can do. There is no need to spend a great deal of money on exercise equipment or hours at the gym. You may just require a good pair of running shoes, a pair of gardening gloves and/or a shovel and/or even a bike. The key is to finding fun and simple ways around the house, outside and at work to add some activity to your day. Some suggested activities include the following:
- Going for a walk (on your lunch)
- Running
- Taking the stairs at work
- Yard work or shovelling snow
- Going for a bike ride
- Swimming
The benefits to physical activity can be a lifesaver – literally. You can dramatically lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Regular activity can also prevent and control high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity.
For the best results, physical activity should be performed for 30 minutes at a time and several days a week. After three months, you may lose weight/inches, your self esteem may increase, and your posture and balance may improve. You will also have more energy, feel more relaxed and your blood pressure may start to come down. The benefits are endless.
For the working parents, you can easily include the kids with these types of activities:
- You can ask them to help you with the yard work and/or shoveling snow
- Take them on your walk (pull the stroller for higher intensity) and
- Take them swimming
- Toss a ball or frisbee around
By including the kids in your activities, you will be teaching them the importance of keeping active and sharing some great family time.
Remember, before starting any sort of activity, it is best to consult with your physician to discuss what is right for you.
